Despite a scheduling hiccup beyond the club’s control, Jets Over Whidbey was once again a great success in 2014. At the last minute the Navy decided they would be using the field on Friday Aug. 22nd for flight operations. This was to have been the first day of RC Jet flying. Though it shut down Friday’s program, club members and participants were allowed by the Navy to park by the main tower and get a first-hand view of the Growlers bouncing. It was quite a show!
Saturday saw 27 registered pilots and some pretty spectacular aircraft. A fairly substantial crowd showed up to observe, and as always the noon line up was a great hit with spectators. For the noon line-up the flying is shut down flying for ½ hour and aircraft are displayed in the pit area to allow observers to get up close and personal with the models and pilots. Winners this year were:
Top Gun: Bob Wonitoy – ME 262 twin turbine
Best Scale: Dave Phillips – F-18C Hornet
Best Flight: Alan Blore – A-10 Thunderbolt
Best Sport: David Euse – Viper Jet
2015 will be the 25th annual Jets Over Whidbey event. This should be an extra special anniversary you won’t want to miss!
